AQUARIUS, CONDUCTING ELECTRICITY
Yikes! Aquarius and its ruler Uranus speak to us today in a loud and unsettling voice. Does this description, “ready to break rules and demolish established patterns or structures, creating sudden and radical change” sound familiar? Let some astonishing classical music and fascinating historical figures help you understand what’s up.

CAPRICORNS ARE NOT CAPRICIOUS
From the total destruction of her home, two workrooms, and precious Hollywood Archive on Tuesday to departure a week later from Ushuaia, the farthest southern port of Argentina for an 18-day research cruise to Antarctica, here is the amazing story of Marilyn Madsen, Capricorn extraordinaire. Another nimble and sure-footed mountain goat, Capricorn composer Francis Poulenc scales steep escarpments and leaps from pinnacle to peak. Listen to the opening and closing moments of his astonishing Concerto for Organ, Tympani, and Strings.

ODE TO—JOY OF THE STARS’ BLOOD!
I don’t have the convenient artist’s dodge—“the one I’m working on”—when asked the annoying question “who is your favorite composer,” because I don’t play an instrument. The tears splashed down on my trembling eight-year-old hands resting uneasily on the piano keys. End of piano lessons.
That mercy hardly meant I didn’t love listening to piano music. My unhesitating reply to the question, since 1967, usually greeted by a blank stare, is Olivier Messiaen, one of the greatest composers of piano music—and so much more. Jacaranda set out in 2007 to change such questioning befuddlement into the look of recognition and curiosity. With important U.S. and LA premieres, Jacaranda’s OM Century project celebrated Messiaen’s 100th birthday with 16 concerts presenting his artistic models, his pals and musical contemporaries, and his many students. For me Messiaen is endlessly fascinating, the quintessential Sagittarian. But the Zodiac’s “Club of Centaurs” is a fiery, feisty, and formidable group of composers who give astrologers food-for-thought on a banquet scale.
I hope you enjoy this journey with the Archers.

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT SCORPIO
Aaron Copland seemed to effortlessly draw from folk sources, Jazz, New England hymnody and sounds of Latin America. His music fused nostalgia with progress to project an optimism that perfectly suited America. But the youthful Copland of his formative years in Paris was celibate, geeky, and determined to be taken seriously. The music written before years 1936 may not be recognizable as it is often harsh, angular, and strongminded. But the abiding love of 17-year-old Victor Kraft liberated the thirty-something voice we know today.
