Haas helped bring the wind serenade into the 20th century. Hollywood’s movie master broke his self-imposed WWII concert silence with bruised but poignant optimism. Schreker’s opulent Klimt-like fantasy world contrasts with Schoenberg’s breathless and thrilling rigor. The destinies of these four Jewish composers were shaped in different ways by their tormentors. Schreker was harassed and Haas interned. Like Korngold, Schoenberg would join the exile community in Los Angeles.
