Three of the most interesting composers on today’s concert stages owe deep gratitude to their teacher Olivier Messiaen. Pierre Boulez (b.1925), Tristan Murail (b.1947) and George Benjamin (b.1960) represent three generations of Europeans profoundly touched by the master’s conception of time and color. This sparkling evening of Birds Bells & Spells, intertwines fond memories and sudden flashes of imagination with Messiaen’s lesser known works – and the distilled essence of each student’s particular genius. Then the sound of rain from Messiaen’s ardent admirer, Toru Takemitsu, sends a spellbound audience into the night.
